Jenn Kang, who is running for mayor of Kings County, recently provided responses to a Q&A SaltWire is providing to municipal election candidates.

Q. What’s your full name?

A. I go by Jenn Kang and am also known as jayke wellan. My preferred pronouns are they and them.

Q. What did you do before you decided to run for office?

A. I gained skills and met incredible homesteaders as a Willing Worker on Organic Farms (WWOOF.net). I helped people troubleshoot their internet issues, both in person and over the phone. I worked with various Annapolis Valley Regional Libraries branches creating fun activities for local youth. I shared life and a beautiful sense of purpose and belonging through my time as a Live-In Caregiver in two different Nova Scotia L'Arche intentional communities for people with and without physical and intellectual disabilities.

Q. Why have you chosen to run in this election campaign?

A. I am running, as an intersectional minority figure, because representation matters. I am running to show other people that they can do it too, that it's a risk worth taking, and because it is a rewarding and honourable endeavour to hope to justly represent over 60,000 people's diverse needs and interests.

Q. What strengths would you bring to council if you are elected?

A. I bring my youthful enthusiasm and my creative problem-solving. I bring my hunger for justice and my experience with fundraising. I bring my attention to detail and my years of coaching and facilitation. I bring my desire for cooperative collaboration.

Q. What do you feel is the key challenge facing the community/region and how would you work to address it?

A. Cost of living. Too many people are struggling day to day to make ends meet and worrying about the future of their aging loved ones, stressed out about their small businesses or their job stability, too many are unable to build equity or are drowning in their debts. I want to start an interest-free patronage microloan program to literally and figuratively enrich the lives of residents.

Q. What one message do you hope gets out to the voters during this election campaign?

A. Please VOTE! Less than 38 per cent of people voted last time and if you don't vote, your voice does not get heard in the election.

Q. How can people contact you?

A. You can text or call: 902-5991737, email jennkang5@gmail.com, message me on Facebook at Jenn Kang aka jayke wellan for Mayor of the County of Kings or follow me on Instagram @jennkangformayorofkings
