Spring provides the perfect inspiration for adding some bright colours and cheerful decor to your home.

Refreshing your home can benefit your mental health, too, as it can create the perfect atmosphere for a personal reset and new beginning.

Here are some tips to consider this season.

1. SPRING CLEANING

Start by spring cleaning and decluttering. This will help your home feel airier and provide you with a good canvas for simple updates to your home decor.

2. HOME PROJECT

Tackle a home project you’ve been delaying. Spring is the perfect time to finish one or two of the little projects on your to-do list.

Consider painting a room, upgrading a light fixture or two, changing hardware on cupboards or cabinets, buying new curtains or bed linens, staining a deck or rearranging furniture.

Small changes won’t overwhelm you, but they will have a big impact.

3. SPRING COLOURS

Embrace spring colours. Spring is all about cheerful and fresh colours, so find ways to incorporate them into your home decor.

Look for greens, yellows, purples, pinks and blues to symbolize new growth, greenery and seasonal flowers.

This time of year, many fun and inexpensive spring accents can be found at the dollar store.

Colourful pots and vases, floral throw pillows and spring-themed pictures are fantastic choices.

Try and carry a similar colour palette throughout your home to make things feel cohesive.

You can opt for a rainbow of colours or you can stick to a neutral palette with a few pops of colour.

For example, black and white decor with yellow accents (like lemons and yellow flowers) can look fantastic.

4. DO IT YOURSELF DIY SPRING DECOR.

When working on a budget, creating and crafting your own home decor is a wonderful option.

You can use inexpensive materials and customize your projects to suit your taste and style.

This year, I made a couple of pictures using a free photoediting software.

My photos said “Hello, Spring” and had a faux wood background.

I printed them at my local photo lab and then I popped them into simple frames.

To finish, I embellished one picture with a handmade pompom garland and the other with a felt flower. (Artificial flowers would also work well.) The pictures are plain, so the possibilities for decorating them are limitless.

Another simple idea is to create a fun spring wreath using a dollar-store umbrella and flowers.

With the umbrella upside down, fill it with flowers, secure the flowers in place with a piece of ribbon and hang it on your front door.

5. GET THE KIDS INTO IT

Get the kids involved. Spring crafting is a great way to get kids involved in creating inexpensive seasonal decor. Head to the dollar store and purchase a few wooden birdhouses, craft paint and paint brushes.

Then, let children use their imaginations to transform the wooden boxes into colourful works of art. I hope you embrace some of my budgetfriendly ideas and have fun this season.
