Fun, fresh, festive fall décor on a budget

I always feel a bit blue when fall rolls around. Summer is full of lazy days and summer family adventures, and fall is filled with new routines and busy schedules.

To help make the transition a bit easier, I find it helpful to organize my house and add a bit of seasonal décor.

The addition of fun and fresh fall items to your home can really help you ease into the new season.

Of course, dollar stores are an inexpensive place to shop, but filling your home with dollar store items is not ideal.

For a high-end look, you need to choose a few great items and use them strategically.

Pick a cohesive theme or colour scheme, select items that you love and don’t be afraid of upgrading pieces with a little DIY.

One simple design hack is to use cheap frames to create unique artwork. I designed a beautiful Hello Pumpkin watercolour print using a free web-based photo editing software and popped it in a floating glass frame.

You can download the print I designed for free at EastCoastMommy.com or you can frame Fall family photos, calendar pages and/ or scrapbook paper.

Seasonal window clings can also be added to glass frames to create simple artwork.

Or you can attach them to glass vases, candles and soap dispensers for a bit of festive flair.

One creative (and simple) way to get a high-end look with inexpensive items is to look at current trends in designer stores and find ways to make and incorporate them using budget-friendly items.

For example, I saw a beautiful, modern, polka dot pumpkin on a high-end website and I easily recreated it (at a fraction of the cost) with a dollar store pumpkin and black and gold paint.

Iridescent accessories are another very hot trend right now, so I was delighted to recently find a cheap iridescent vase in fall colours. I filled it with fake wheat, and it looks fantastic sitting on my hallway table. No one would ever guess I only paid a couple of dollars for it.

It’s also helpful (and economical) to find pieces that can do double duty. For example, you can make over summer décor you already have.

This summer, I took a hanging flower tin from the dollar store, filled it with floral foam, and added artificial summer flowers.

Then, for fall, I removed the summer flowers and filled the tin with sunflowers. It looks absolutely gorgeous hanging on my front door.

You can also choose fall décor items that can transition into Halloween. For example, I bought a wooden dollar store book stack, added the works “farm fresh pumpkins” and topped it with a little pom-pom pumpkin.

It’s perfect for fall, but when it gets closer to Halloween, I’ll turn the book stack around, add the words “spells and potions”, and top it with an LED black cat light.

Adapting seasonal décor is a great way to save money and reduce clutter.

Adding the colours and textures of fall to your home is a perfect way to embrace the change in season. Grab a pumpkin spice latte, put on a sweater, purchase a few pieces of Autumn décor and have fun.
