Mississauga Getting Ready For Winter With Fall Maintenance And Cleanup Work
MISSISSAUGA: The City of Mississauga is gearing up for the upcoming winter season by taking proactive measures to ensure that parks, roads, trails and public spaces are well maintained and safe for residents and visitors. Park maintenance and cleanup City crews have been hard at work keeping Mississauga public spaces, parks, trails and green spaces looking their best and getting them ready for winter. When you’re visiting a park or green space, you may see crews doing the following:
• Mulching/collecting leaves
• Moving waste bins to park entrances from their summer locations
• Preparing garden beds for the winter
• Restoring sports fields so that they are ready for next summer
• Cleaning litter and debris
• Continuing to inspect playgrounds to ensure they remain safe
• Making sure irrigation systems and plumbing are ready for the winter, like water fountains and seasonal park washrooms
• Closing certain facilities for the winter. Select City natural turf soccer fields, baseball diamonds, cricket pitches that don’t have fall permits and spray pads are now closed. Natural turf football fields will close for use on November 1. Artificial turf fields remain open until further notice (weather dependent).
Road repairs and maintenance
The City maintains approximately 5,700 lane kilometres of roads, 2,420 kilometres of sidewalks, 51,000 catch basins, 1,000 pedestrian crossings, 68 kilometres of on-street bike lanes and 127 kilometres of roadside multi-use trails, which residents and visitors rely on. This fall, City crews are continuing their work to ensure this infrastructure remains in a state of good repair to keep everyone moving safely. This includes inspecting, maintaining and repairing sidewalks, repairing potholes and roadway damage, refreshing pavement markings and clearing litter and debris on roads and hard surfaces.
Mississauga’s construction season continues into the fall as crews work to complete the essential work necessary to keep us all safe.
This includes road resurfacing, sidewalk and multi-use trail construction, bridge repairs, pavement rehabilitation, intersection improvements and installing new traffic signals and streetlights. Check out the online construction map to learn more about ongoing construction in your neighbourhood.
Here’s how you can help keep Mississauga clean and safe:
• Report litter or dumping, damaged trees, dead or unhealthy trees and trees in need of pruning to help maintain the health and cleanliness of Mississauga’s parks and greenspaces.
• When visiting a park or greenspace, remember to do your part by throwing out your litter, dog waste and recycling in the proper containers.
• Report potholes and damaged sidewalks, curbs and catch basins by calling 311 (905615-4311 outside City limits) or submitting an online service request.
• Avoid raking yard waste and grass clippings onto the road. Place leaves, tree trimmings, branches and other yard waste in yard waste bags for collection by Peel Region. You can refer to the leaf pickup route map and schedule to find out if your street is part of the City’s Vacuum Leaf Pickup Program.
• If safe to do so, remove litter, leaves and debris from roadside catch basins. Blocked catch basins can be reported to 311.
