One Yonge Community Recreation Centre On The Waterfront Officially Opened
TORONTO: Mayor Olivia Chow and Deputy Mayor Ausma Malik (Spadina-Fort York) were joined by City of Toronto staff and members of the local community to officially open the new One Yonge Community Recreation Centre on Toronto’s downtown waterfront.
The new public community centre at 24 Freeland St. occupies approximately 51,000 sq. ft. of space and is spread out over two floors in the One Yonge condominium building. The groundfloor lobby leads to the second storey where most of the recreation amenities are located.
Public amenities at the One Yonge Community Recreation Centre include:
• Large 84-foot double gymnasium
• Six-lane, 25-metre pool
• Climbing wall
• Multipurpose rooms for programming and community building
•Tceaching kitchen
• Fitness studios
Many of the rooms in the centre are designed to be easily reconfigured to respond to the needs of the community. The entire second level is designed with a unique circuit-style layout, which easily guides and navigates visitors around the central core and throughout the entire space.
The community centre is a multi-purpose facility that is fully accessible and will serve the growing communities along Toronto’s downtown waterfront. The site was formerly occupied by the Toronto Star building and is part of a master planned, mixed-use community that will include five towers, 2,860 residential units, office and retail space along with the community recreation centre. This community recreation centre is part of the first phase of the development – a 65-storey condominium containing 496 residential units.
Numerous recreation programs and drop-in classes are being offered at the centre. The One Yonge Community Recreation Centre is part of FitnessTO, a new fitness membership program that delivers affordable and flexible options to suit peoples’ lifestyles, fitness levels and goals at all City recreation centres.
