Peel Region Plans to Open Asylum Seeker Reception Centre with Funding from Federal and Provincial Governments

-

Peel Region is on the verge of centre for asylum seekers, pending federal and provincial governments. opening a much-needed reception approval and funding from both the Brampton mayor Patrick Brown emphasizes the urgency, citing the potential risks to vulnerable individuals if adequate shelter isn’t provided, particularly during harsh winter months.

The proposed centre aims to accommodate over 1,000 asylum claimants monthly, offering essential services and temporary housing. The plan, outlined in a proposal sent to Marc Miller, Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, highlights the region’s intention to establish a centralized resource hub for asylum seekers in the Greater Toronto Area. The proposed location is a four-storey office building near Toronto.

The success of this initiative hinges on securing additional funding of more than $46 million from both federal and provincial sources. Minister Miller’s office confirms receipt of the proposal and indicates ongoing review. If funding is approved, the reception centre could open as early as July, providing crucial support to asylum seekers in Peel Region and addressing a pressing humanitarian need in the community.
