Happiness is … the subject of discussion for older adults
C’mon. Get happy. You’ll need to be if you plan on attending a May 4 talk in St. Catharines by University of Waterloo professor and author Brian Orend.
Th e event, for which Orend will speak about happiness, is being hosted by Lifelong Learning Niagara for adults 50 and older.
Th e presentation will consider whether we could be doing more to augment happiness in our lives, by drawing on the latest research, including on positive psychology. It will suggest a framework that tends to work for most people, and will pay attention to what the research says about happiness in retirement and for people with chronic conditions, as both groups confront special challenges to their pursuit of happiness.
Orend’s research focuses on three areas : ethics of war and peace ( especially post- war reconstruction); human rights; and happiness.
He is the author of six books, including the Morality of War and Introduction to International Studies. His next book will be about his own pursuit of greater happiness in spite of epilepsy caused by a brain tumour.
Orend’s lecture will be held at the Armenian Community Centre at 156 Martindale Rd. from 1 p. m. to 3 p. m.
Tickets are $ 10 a person and can be reserved by e- mailing lifelonglearningniagara@gmail.com or by calling 905- 834- 4442.
Lifelong Learning Niagara is a new not- for- profit organization. It is a volunteer- managed group that provides learning opportunities for adults in Niagara. Th e proceeds from each event go towards managing basic operational costs.
