Almighty buck new drug in Niagara Falls

- Richard Murri Niagara Falls

I am writing about the proposed development at the Thundering Waters property.

It has always been the fact that when the choice comes up to protecting wetlands and allowing development, developers almost always win. When taxpayers send planeloads of politicians to foreign countries to seek financing for vast projects, it is not unreasonable to think that there will be a trade-off.

Although political types talk about the “win-win,” invariably there will be losers. In this case the losers seem to be the native environment: plants, birds, animals, etc.

We humans are also the losers because an important part of being human has always been the ability to experience our natural surroundings. We in Niagara Falls already have endured the constant drone of helicopters, the roar of jet boats, the shouts of zipliners. The mission statement of the Niagara Parks Commission has been altered to the point where it seems to be just another tourism business. Squeeze every possible nickel you can out of the suckers before they leave is the business model.

When is it enough? The almighty buck is the new drug.

It seems past time that ordinary citizens remind the political class that works for them that they will ignore our wishes and concerns at their own peril.

The rallying cry of “throw the bums out” is not reserved for Donald Trump supporters in the U.S..
