Pelham planting trees for Arbour Day

-

Pelham residents are invited to help plant six trees Friday in celebration of Arbour Day. The free community event takes place at Woodstream Park, and is hosted in conjunction with Forests Ontario, Ontario’s Green Leaf Challenge and Ontario Wood. Residents are asked to bring a shovel and gardening gloves. Trees, forestry specialists, mulch and snacks will be provided. Arbour Day is globally recognized initiative that promotes the growth and caring of trees. “This is our first time hosting a community tree planting event in partnership with Forests Ontario,” said Jodi Hendriks, Pelham’s culture and community enhancement programmer. “This initiative gives us an opportunity to start giving back after many trees were infected by the emerald ash borer and were taken out of our parks and surrounding community; we’ll be planting three bur oak and three scarlet oak.” The event will proceed, rain or shine, so participants are reminded to dress for the weather and to consider bringing appropriate outdoor clothing, sturdy shoes (steel toe if possible), a hat, sunscreen and insect repellent. It takes place 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the park at 79 Spruceside Cres. Parking will be available at Pelham Arena. Space for this event is limited, so people wishing to participate should pre-register at https://ctp17pelham.eventbrite.com.
