Teen aids Women’s Place with RBC’s Make 150 Count

- MICHELLE ALLENBERG

With the help of RBC, 18-year0old Alyssa Girotti is giving a helping hand to Women’s Place of South Niagara.

The bank is celebrating Canada’s 150 birthday with a campaign called Make 150 Count. The program is giving youths $150 to give back to their communities however they choose.

When Girotti heard about the campaign she applied — and to her surprise she was chosen to receive the money.

She said at first she wasn’t sure what she wanted to do with the money, but after some thought she chose Women’s Place.

Girotti said the organization touched her because many women who use the services flee abusive situations with nothing. Girotti thought about the different things women need, and decided to donate feminine hygiene products, diapers, wet wipes and chocolates.

“Women shouldn’t have to worry about feminine products when they leave their situation … it is expensive, it is ridiculous,” she said.

Giving back to the community is important to Girotti. She said “we live in such an amazing place” and we should help one another. She said any little bit can make a big difference in someone’s life.

“The shelter is an amazing place, they are always busy … it felt really good to help,” she said. MAllenberg@postmedia.com Twitter: @M_Allenberg
