Super Sunday lineup finalized
There were no upsets in the opening round of the Niagara Regional Minor Football League playoffs Sunday in St. Catharines.
All six seeds lived up to their billing at a double tripleheader played on the turf at Kiwanis Field and will advance to next weekend’s Super Sunday finals on the championship side of the bracket.
Semifinal-round losers have the chance to end the year on a winning note in Finbow Cup consolation finals, also next Sunday in St. Catharines.
Bantam
After wrapping up the regular season with a 9-0 record, The Fort Erie KLIXSports Photography Longhorns continued their winning ways with a 56-19 victory over the West Niagara Home Hardware Steelers.
Mason Arbic, Drew Beam and Anthony Gomez, with two touchdowns and a two-point conversions each; Kaiden Craft, touchdown, twopoint convert; and Campbell LaRoche, touchdown; scored for Fort Erie which beat West Niagara for the fourth time in as many starts in 2017.
Justin Dawe, two touchdowns; Jordan Hvozba, one touchdown; and Holden Aarlaht, convert; scored for the Steelers, who were outscored by an average of 41-12.2 in their losses to the Longhorns during the regular season.
Joshua Tropea scored two touchdowns, Marshall a touchdown and a two-point convert, Aiden Maxim Chris Petterossi a touchdown each and the Niagara Falls Legion Branch 51 Argonauts also a team safety as they punched their ticket to the bantam final with a 30-12 victory over the Niagara Baron Roofing Titans.
Sacade Kasamba had two touchdowns for the Barons, who will face the Steelers in the B final.
The Longhorns beat the Argos in head-to-head play 26-24, 34-22 and lost 34-33.
Peewee
The West Niagara Pneu Hyde Steelers blanked the Welland Tigers 420, and the St. Catharines Paul’s Kids Steelers defeated the Niagara Falls Condotta Merritt Insurance Argonauts 50-43 setting the stage for Super Sunday’s peewee championship.
Scoring for the top-seeded Falcons, 8-0 in league play; were Nolan Banga, two touchdowns; Jayden Gurzi-MacDonald, touchown, touchdown pass; Lucas Hazelton, touchdown; Ryan Lapcevich, touchdown; and Ryan Broomer, three extra-point kicks.
Scoring for touchdowns for the Seahawks were Justin Savoie, with two; Joshua Kaufman, one; and Joshua Kaufman, one. Thomas Alexander had two, two-point conversions as well as a safety, and Darius Best had a two-point convert.
Tyrell Kelman, four touchdowns; Rickie Moodie, touchdown; and Connor Driscoll, two, two-point conversions; scored for Niagara Falls.
The Falcons swept the season series versus the Seahawks with 48-18 and 46-12 victories.
Atom
It will be the No. 1 seed Fort Erie J & A Athletics Longhorns and the second-seeded West Niagara R. Bailey Transport Steelers playing for Football Niagara’s atom title.
The Steelers tamed the Niagara Falls E-Quip Lions 30-6 in the semifinals thanks to Jake Portolesi’s four touchdowns and Franklin McPherson’s two field goals.
Austin MacRae accounted for the Lions’ scoring with a touchdown.
In the Longhorns’ 27-19 defeat of the Welland Super Mario’s Pizza Ticats the scorers for Fort Erie were Grant Spada, two touchdowns, onepoint convert; Jordan Payne and Gavyn Vazquez, one touchdown each.
Ben Tsanoff, with two touchdowns, one convert; and Everett Hemauer, touchdown; replied for Welland.
The Longhorns shut out the Steelers 25-0 and tied them 12-12 in league play.
