Corroded valve cause of watermain break

-

A corroded valve within a watermain chamber on Woodlawn Road in Welland caused some disruption to service late Sunday into Monday afternoon. Vincent Beaudoin, general foreman of the public works department with the city, said the municipality received a call late Sunday evening about a watermain break on Woodlawn Road at Primeway Drive. He said the westbound lanes had to be temporarily shut down due to water over the road. The closure was maintained until the situation was under control. At that point, one lane was reopened and the other remained closed while crews were on scene. As crews worked to find the problem, water had to be temporarily shut off for Walmart and residents on Daimler Parkway. Beaudoin said crews discovered the valve had given way due to corrosion, which he suspects is due to the amount of salt used on the road in the winter. Emergency repairs were made to the valve in the two-metre deep chamber and he said those repairs should hold. To prevent the issue from happening again, public works will be using a special corrosion-proof wrap to put around the valve. He said standard operating procedures were followed in the process and water sampling was also conducted at the time. Glabb will be followed by Wellandbased The Howling Horns, an eight-piece blues and classic rock band. The Associates will play all the favourites from the past to the present. The concert gets underway at 7 p.m. A full lineup for the concert series can be found at www.welland.ca/ Leisure/eventsinfo/ SummerMusicFestival.asp.
