No. 1 again with the Beamsville Bullet

- BERND FRANKE

The Beamsville Bullet lived up to his nickname at New Humberstone Speedway Sunday night in Port Colborne.

Paul Klager loaded himself into his Mod Lite race car, took aim at the target — victory lane, 10 laps and one post-race tech inspection in the distance — and shot his way through a five-car field for the checkered flag.

His second victory in as many starts this year at Humberstone was a flag-to-flag win for Klager, the co-pole sitter along with Jeffery May.

Klager set the pace in the lone qualifying heat.

Familiar faces, all but one from Niagara, visited victory lane on a night that had 80 cars and trucks gearing up for racing in the pit area.

Chad Homan of Macedon, N.Y., east of Rochester, started on the outside on the front row and appeared well on his way to a convincing win in Sunday’s Late Models feature before contact between Colton Ledingham on Mike Greene brought out the caution flag with one lap remaining.

Homan held on withstanding pressure from Sam Pennacchio and Rob Pietz to earn his sixth victory of the season competing in Port Colborne.

In Sportsman, the top weekly racing class at Humberstone, defending track champion Brad Rouse pulled away from Chad Chevalier following a restart in the late going to take the checkered flag for the fifth time this season.

Rouse, of St. Catharines; and Chevalier, Port Colborne; were both seeking their second wins of the weekend.

Rouse set the pace in the 40-lap, $1,000-to-win Gabe Bellante Memorial Saturday at Merrittville. The night before at Ohsweken, Chevalier held off Rouse to win the Race of Champions feature.

Rouse is enjoying a successful summer, on both sides of the border. In addition to his five wins at Merrittville, where he is the current points leader, Rouse is topping the driver standings in the Sportsman class at Freedom Motorsports Park in Delevan, N.Y., southeast of Buffalo.

Also making a bid to make victory lane at Humberstone his reserved parking spot is Dave Bailey in the Street Stock division. For the fifth time this year the Hagersville hotshoe was firing on all eight cylinders.

Bailey, the defending points champion at the Port Colborne as well as at Merrittville and Ohsweken, went outside of Billy Bleich Jr. three laps in to take a lead he would not relinguish in the 20lap feature, despite lap traffic.

Like Rouse, Bailey ended the night in the winners circle for the second time on the weekend. On Friday he and Ryan Dinning each won a Thunder Stocks feature at Ohsweken.

Dain City’s Kyle Tomaski made the most of his co-pole sitting position with Mitch Dumont racing to his fourth victory of the season in Pro 4 Trucks.

Also using a starting position in the front row to full advantage was Leroy Buscumb. The Port Colborne driver pulled away from fellow pole sitter Rob Sauder and remained the front-runner the rest of the way for win No. 3 at Humberstone.

Max Chichuck overtook Richard Hare for the lead, and the win, in the latter stages of the Cooper Motorsports Minivans of Mayhem event.
