Charges are pending against a driver involved in a threecar collision on northbound Highway 406 that resulted in one car going up in flames on Wednesday morning.

Ontario Provincial Police media relations officer Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the collision occurred just north of the Highway 20 overpass at about 8: 45 a. m.

He said Wednesday afternoon that it appears one car had hit another, which subsequently tapped a third. He said the first of the three vehicles became engulfed in flames, but it is not known at this time what the cause of that fire was. The incident didn’t result in any injuries and there was only minor damage to the other two vehicles.

Schmidt said there are charges pending against the driver of the car that caught on fire, but he did not have the specifics of those charges before deadline Wednesday evening.

Because of the crash, OPP closed the northbound lanes, which were already reduced to one lane because of construction, and diverted traffic to the Highway 20 cutoff. The on- ramp access from Highway 20 to the 406 northbound lanes was also closed.

Traffic came to a near standstill on Highway 406 as people rerouted.

He said the fire was put out pretty quickly and the vehicle was towed away quickly, too. Highway 406 and its on- ramp from Highway 20 were reopened to traffic within about 45 minutes.
