From Niagara and Brantford to Kitchener-Waterloo and Burlington, Hamilton Health Sciences serves a population of 2.3 million people throughout south-central Ontario with specialized services, many of which cannot be found anywhere else in the region.

More than 50,000 patients from the Niagara region receive care from Hamilton Health Sciences annually. In some cases, patients are sent directly to a Hamilton Health Sciences hospital; in other cases, they are transferred from the local hospital to receive highly specialized care, before returning home or in some cases returning back to their local hospital.

Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation is responsible for raising funds to ensure that its hospitals have the equipment essential to diagnose, treat, and care for patients from throughout southcentral Ontario, including the Niagara region.

Supported sites of the foundation include Hamilton General Hospital and the Regional Rehabilitation Centre; Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre; McMaster Children’s Hospital, McMaster University Medical Centre and Ron Joyce Children’s Health Centre; and St. Peter’s Hospital.

“Donor support allows equipment to be purchased, clinical spaces to be redeveloped, lifealtering research to be conducted and important educational opportunities to be taken by the talented teams at Hamilton Health Sciences to help stay on the leading edge of health care,” says Pearl F. Veenema, president and CEO of Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation.

As a part of Hamilton Health Sciences, Hamilton General Hospital is home to the province’s leading cardiac surgery and stroke programs, and is renowned for its programs specializing in trauma, burn treatment, stroke and neurosciences. The General also houses the regional rehabilitation centre, which provides intensive therapy for stroke, acquired brain injury, amputation and spinal cord injury patients.

Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre is the only site in southcentral Ontario treating all cancers in adults. It is also home to the region’s only stem cell transplant, acute leukemia and blood cancer programs, and a comprehensive cancer clinical trials program is housed at the Escarpment Cancer Research Institute.

McMaster Children’s Hospital is the second largest provider of inpatient pediatric services in Ontario. The site is home to the province’s largest neonatal intensive care unit, the largest singlesite inpatient pediatric mental health program in Canada, and the only pediatric trauma centre in the region. An internationally renowned team of physicians with expertise in childhood cancer also provides care at the hospital.

A range of specialized outpatient services also operate at Ron Joyce Children’s Health Centre, as part of McMaster Children’s Hospital. At its shared home with the hospital, McMaster University Medical Centre provides high-risk obstetrical care.

St. Peter’s Hospital is home to Canada’s largest palliative care program and to the Centre for Healthy Aging. St. Peter’s Hospital provides services for patients with needs associated with medically complex care, behavioural health, restorative care and palliative care.

“It is gratifying to think about all the ways in which donor dollars support the care provided across Hamilton Health Sciences and how many patients’ lives are affected,” says Veenema.

Hamilton Health Sciences is committed to providing specialized care required for all stages of life. Donor support is essential to making this high level of care possible for patients from across Niagara and throughout southcentral Ontario.
