Veterans to ride free
Veterans will be able to ride Welland Transit buses free on Remembrance Day, a report to council Tuesday said.
The report, from transit supervisor Dave Stuart, said the Canadian Urban Transit Industry has a long standing tradition of providing free transit service to veterans on Remembrance Day each year.
“Any veterans who served in our military may ride the buses free of charge on November 11th by simply informing the bus operator of their service to our country. The costs associated with this initiative are in house staff time and the revenues foregone are very minimal,” Stuart’s report said.
It also said the initiative will be marketed through the normal corporate mediums: Civic Corner page, large LED screen outside Civic Square, posters in the buses and Bus Terminal, as well as the city website.
“As in years past, Welland Transit buses will also detour around the Royal Canadian Legion on Morningstar Avenue from 9:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., which allows the veterans to perform their Remembrance Day ceremonies and parade unimpeded. Also, at 11 a.m. all buses will safely pull over to the side of the road for a moment of silence to pay tribute to those members of our military who have given so much to ensure our freedoms and quality of life have been maintained. As well, our transit buses will have Lest We Forget displayed on the destination signs,” Stuart’s report said.
