Affordable seniors housing units coming to Pelham
Development for an affordable housing apartment building for seniors is expected to begin next spring in Pelham.
The municipality sold townowned land in east Fonthill for $ 1.1 million to Parkhill Properties Corp.
On just under 0.6 hectares ( 1.48 acres) behind the new Food Basics grocery store, the company will build an eight- storey, 80- to 90- unit apartment- style building. The residence will include both one- and two- bedroom units.
The purchase agreement requires that two- thirds of the units be rented geared to income.
Marc MacDonald, public relations and marketing specialist for the town, said in an email that the development will allow lifelong residents the ability to stay in the town they call home.
Parkhill will adjust rent for residents to fit their budgets and needs.
The location of the apartment building will be convenient for residents. MacDonald said Pelham prides itself in being a bike- friendly, walkable and age- friendly community, so being close to amenities will be beneficial in keeping with Pelham’s mission statement.
Mayor Dave Augustyn said town council is dedicated to assisting residents however it can.
“It remains a priority of council to find solutions for our seniors and the affordable housing challenge our citizens face — I know some people ready to sign up,” he said in a media release.
