Brock men start 8- 0

Badgers bounce past Laurentian to extend winning streak in men’s basketball to 13 games

Four players scored in double digits and Brock defeated visiting Laurentian 71- 55 to remain undefeated in men’s university basketball.

Dani Elgadi led the Badgers with 21 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Tyler Brown, with 16 points, six assists; Cassidy Ryan, 12 points, five rebounds; and Johneil Simpson, 11 points, four rebounds; also were key contributo­rs as Brock improved to 8- 0 in league play and to 13- 0 overall.

The Badgers shot 40 per cent, 30for- 68; from the field, 35.3 per cent, 6- for- 17 from beyond the threepoint arc, and 62.5 per cent, 5- for8; from free- throw line in Saturday night’s game at Bob Davis Gymnasium.

Six Brock players reached double digits in scoring the night before in a 90- 57 victory over Nipissing, also at home: Daniel Cayer, 18 points, five rebounds, five steals, three assists; Kascius Small- Martin, 16 points, off the bench; Elgadi, 12 points, six rebounds; Ryan, 12 points, three rebounds; Simpson, 11 points, and Godsman Kwakwah, 10 points.

Elgadi’s 12 points moved him into sixth all- time in scoring at the university with 2,396 points. Brock hall- of- famer Gord Wood finished his career with 2,388 points.

The Badgers’ 17- 0 start on the way to 36- 2 lead with six minutes remaining in the second quarter was one of the best in the program’s history.

Brock is back on the court for an 8 p. m. tipoff Friday versus the McMaster Marauders.

Losing skid stopped

Brock defeated Nipissing 61- 42 Friday and Laurentian 76- 57 Saturday to return to .500 in women’s university basketball.

Baillie Campbell, 15 points, six rebounds; Welland native and Confederat­ion graduate Courtney McPherson, 12 points, seven rebounds; Ieva Sukeviciut­e, 11 points, four rebounds; Kristin Gallant, 10 points, seven rebounds, five steals; and Stephanie Findlay, 10 points, six rebounds; scored in double digits for the Badgers versus Laurentian as Brock improved to 4- 4.

Hot hands against Nipissing were Findlay, with 18 points, including 12 from beyond the arc; Gallant, nine points, eight rebounds, four assists; McPherson, eight points, nine rebounds; Wellander and Jean Vanier alum Brooke- Lyn Murdoch and Sukeviciut­e, seven points apiece.

The Badgers host McMaster, 5- 2, Friday at 6 p. m.

The Kat comes back

Kat Whiteye scored Brock’s only goal in regulation and the game winner in an eight- round shootout as the Badgers doubled Windsor 2- 1 in women’s university hockey.

Jensen Murphy stopped 33 shots in regulation and six more in the shootout to earn the win for Brock, 5- 2- 2- 1.

Maggie Spratt- Mallick and Christian Ieradi also found the back of the net for the Badgers in the shootout in Sunday afternoon’s game at Seymour- Hannah Sports and Entertainm­ent Centre in St. Catharines.

On Saturday, Murphy backstoppe­d Brock to a 1- 0 victory over seventh- ranked Guelph. She made 30 saves earning her second shutout of the season.

Kiana Tobia’s first goal of the season, at 5: 23 of the third period, accounted for the only scoring in the matchup between two of the top teams in Ontario.

Brock is the on the road for two games this week, Thursday against Laurier and Saturday against Waterloo.

Badgers go 1- 1

Brock dropped a 4- 2 decision to Guelph in men’s university hockey after opening the weekend with a 3- 2 overtime victory over Laurier.

Chris Maniccia and Ayden MacDonald replied for the Badgers in Saturday night’s loss in Guelph, which dropped Brock’s record to 4- 5- 3.

Brock netminder Clint Windsor had an especially busy night as the Gryphons outshot the Badgers 5220.

Guelph’s last goal was scored into an empty net.

Brock scored three unanswered goals, including one on a penalty shot, in a come- from- behind victory over the Golden Hawks Friday night in Waterloo.

Sammy Banga cut Laurier’s twogoal deficit in half early in the third period, and scored on a penalty shot with 31 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime.

Brock was awarded a penalty shot after the Golden Hawks received two warnings for taking the net off its moorings and the net was dislodged for a third time.

Skylar Pacheco found Josh Timpano who slid the puck past former Niagara IceDog and one- time Port Colborne Pirate Chris Festarini for the game- winning goal three minutes into overtime.

The Badgers are home to Nipissing Friday, 7: 15 p. m., and to Laurentian Saturday, 3: 15 p. m.

Unhappy hosts

Brock fell to 2- 3 in women’s university volleyball following a tough, five- set loss to McMaster Sunday afternoon at Bob Davis Gymnasium.

Set scores were 26- 24, 21- 25, 2520, 23- 25, 16- 14.

Renee Helmer led the Badgers, and all players, with 19 kills.

Darby Taylor, with 11 kills, four aces; and Laura Condotta, 10 kills, 10 digs; also were top contributo­rs for Brock on offence.

Emily Armstrong collected 41 assists and 14 digs from the setter position, while Badgers libero Julia Balatbat also had 14 digs.

In men’s action, Brock was swept by the Marauders – 26- 24, 25- 18, 25- 10 – to remain winless at 0- 5.

Logan House, with seven kills and 18 assists, Alex Carter, six kills, 11 assists; and Reg Lean, five kills, 10 kills; were standouts for the Badgers.

The Toronto Varsity Blues visit Brock for a doublehead­er Sunday. Action gets underway with the women’s game at 2 p. m. followed by the men’s game two hours later.
