Man wanted for attempted murder in Falls bar shooting

- ALISON LANGLEY

An arrest warrant has been issued for a 26- year- old man wanted in connection with what police say was a targeted shooting at a Niagara Falls bar Wednesday.

Niagara Regional Police and Niagara Emergency Medical Services were called to the parking lot of Whiskey Nick’s Texas Bar & Grill at about 4: 30 p. m. and found a 49- year- old man suffering from gunshot wounds.

The male was transported by paramedics to a local hospital and then air- lifted to an out- of- region hospital.

Police said the man’s injuries are not life- threatening. He remains in hospital. His name has not been released.

An arrest warrant was issued Thursday for Joseph Douglas Minty, a resident of Niagara Falls, on a charge of a attempted murder.

He is described as 5- foot- 10, 200 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He has tattoos on his arms, chest and abdomen.

Police said Minty should be considered armed and dangerous.

The gun used in the shooting has not been recovered, police said.

“We are appealing to Joseph Minty to contact a lawyer to arrange for peaceful surrender,” said police spokesperson Stephanie Sabourin.

Anyone with information on Minty’s whereabouts can contact police at 905- 688- 4111 ext. 9470 or call 911.

There was heavy police presence in the area Wednesday evening as members of the emergency tactical unit and canine unit searched the area surrounding the bar at the corner of Drummond and McLeod roads.

“Officers did advise some residents to stay inside as they were moving through various areas last night, which is standard procedure,” Sabourin said.

Several employees at nearby businesses did not want to speak to the media on Thursday.

One man who stopped at a gas station at the busy intersection said he lives in the area but didn’t hear anything the night of the shooting.

“I’ve been in the bar a few times and it’s not too bad,” he said. “It’s just a small little bar with a lot of regulars.”

Meanwhile, police continue to investigate a report of shots fired at a home near downtown Niagara Falls.

On Nov. 24, a home in the area of Second Avenue and Morrison Street was hit by what police say was a blast consistent with a shotgun. Police believe the residence was targeted.
