St. Alexander Catholic Elementary School students have baked up a fundraiser — and tasty dog treats — as a way to help sheltered animals.

About 20 full- day kindergarten students were inspired to make the treats and sell them for donations that will be used to purchase blankets, cleaning supplies, dog food and more for Welland and District Humane Society.

Teacher Tracy Goodwin said it all began when students created a “doctor’s office” in the corner of the classroom. The students learned about the profession and where people go to receive medical treatment. She said that made some students ask where animals go when they need help.

“We have a student in Grade 4 who brought his service dog … We talked about how animals help us and how we can help animals,” Goodwin said.

The students were inspired to assist the local humane society after they learned how the organization helps animals. Goodwin and early childhood educator Erika Bachynski decided the students could make dog treats to raise money.

The simple recipe includes eggs, carrots, pumpkin and flour.

The class began making and baking the treats last week. Goodwin said students raised about $ 100 the first day selling them.

“We didn’t put a set price on them. Some people have given $ 1 and some have given up to $ 20 for a bag of treats,” Goodwin said.

On Dec. 10 the teachers and students will visit the humane society to donate the goods. Students and parents have been invited to join in to show support.

Anyone interested in purchasing a bag of treats can contact Niagara Catholic District School Board before Wednesday, Dec. 6, at info@ncdsb.com.
