Time capsule a snapshot of Port Colborne history

- DAVE JOHNSON

Quintin Keddy will be 68 years old when a time capsule he’s helping put together will be opened.

And the Lakeshore Catholic High School student said he’d enjoy being there when it is.

Keddy is helping Port Colborne Historical and Marine Museum and the City of Port Colborne with the time capsule, which started as a Canada 150 project last year.

“We have a good variety of items from many different people,” said Keddy, adding the items will end up in a box instead of a tube. “A tube wasn’t big enough.”

The co- op student has an interest in history and when the time capsule was being discussed at the museum, he decided it was something he wanted to help out with.

“I thought it would be really interesting … things we commonly use today and take for granted, and being able to preserve them for the future,” said Keddy museum research assistant.

Museum director/ curator Stephanie Powell Baswick said Keddy is the lead on the project.

“He’s been spearheading the time capsule project for the Canada 150 committee,” she said.

With the opening of a time capsule from 1967, Canada’s centennial anniversary year, last year, Baswick said it was decided to put together another one to be opened in 50 years, during the country’s bicentennial.

“We have been collecting from the community and were at the Vale Health and Wellness Centre on New Year’s Day. We were collecting personal messages from community members who were attending the event there and wanted to be included.”

Baswick said the names and country of origin of a number of new Canadians sworn- in last year at Roselawn Centre will be included. Politicians, businesses and community groups were asked if they wanted to contribute items, as well.

While Mayor John Maloney will make the final decision on what’s contained in time capsule, one of the items should be a tintype photo taken of council on the museum grounds last year.

Both Baswick and Keddy said the museum is still collecting items, and hopes to have everything ready for Monday, Jan. 15.

Baswick said there’s a possibility the time capsule may end up in a showcase at Vale Centre, instead of being buried, so that everyone can see it.

Whatever decision, the time capsule will be sealed and ready for Heritage Week, which runs Feb. 19 to 25.

“It’s an appropriate time, the theme this year is Heritage Stands the Test of Time.

The time capsule will be buried at Vale Health and Wellness Centre in February To donate items contact the museum at 905- 834- 7604. dajohnson@postmedia.com twitter.com/ DaveJTheTrib
