Warm up with Soup’s On

- MICHELLE ALLENBERG

Soup will be simmering during the 16th annual Soup’s On luncheon later this month in Welland.

The event at St. Kevin’s Parish Hall supports a scholarship fund. To date, 45 scholarships have been awarded to students active in social service programs graduating from high schools within the Welland area, but also including Blessed Trinity in Grimsby, Lakeshore Catholic in Port Colborne and E. L. Crossley in Pelham.

Organizer Joe Barkovich said the scholarship was initially $ 300, but has increased over the years. Since 2007 the scholarship has been $ 1,000.

About 350 to 400 people attend Soup’s On each year to enjoy allyoucan- eat soup and buns.

For the Firday, Jan. 26, event, the Niagara College Canadian Food and Wine Institute, Blessed Trinity High School, Confederation secondary school, Eastdale Secondary School, Notre Dame College School, Lakeshore Catholic High School and local business Stephanie the Lunch Lady will create mouth- watering soups. Some of the options will be turkey and wild rice; smokey bacon, maple and butternut squash; and roasted tomato.

Barkovich said the menu changes each year.

Lunch will be served at 11 a. m., noon and at 1 p. m. at the hall on Niagara Street. Barkovich said the noon sitting has sold out.

Tickets cost $ 10 and can be purchased by calling 905- 735- 3562. Eventgoers will receive a recipe booklet of the soups served during the lunch.

Students interested in the scholarship should visit their school guidance office this spring. Recipients will be announced at graduation.
