Flooding a possibility in Niagara after rain, melt

Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority is warning of potential for flooding following this week’s rapid snow melt.

And Niagara was expected to get 20 to 30 millimetres of precipitation between Thursday evening and Friday afternoon. This, in combination with the unseasonably warm weather has the potential to increase water levels.

In a media release, NPCA said there has been increased runoff into local creeks due to snow melting.

As of Thursday afternoon, all watercourses were below critical levels. NPCA does not expect major flooding.

Residents are warned to be aware of flooding in low lying ares.

People are also warned of ice jam flooding caused by increased water runoff and destablilized ice. People and pets should stay away from streams and creeks.

NPCA will continue to monitor water and weather conditions.
