Oscar faves fill Brock film series lineup
Every year, the Brock University Film Series ( BUFS) offers a glimpse of the Oscar nominations to come.
For more than 40 years, the film series has put the spotlight on foreign and independent movies just prior to their Oscar attention, and organizers expect no different this year.

Jan. 31 - Human Flow
Feb. 7 - The Square

“It’s a chance to see some of these hotly tipped films,” says Brock film professor Scott Henderson, part of the selection committee. “Many of them are smaller films that might not come to cinemas in Niagara, so it’s a great way to see them on a big screen, the way they’re meant to be seen.”
The series kicks off its 2018 season Wednesday at Pen Centre’s Landmark Cinemas with the French comedy C’est la Vie! and continues every Wednesday until April 4. All screenings start at 7 p. m.
Henderson says one of the highlights of this year’s series is Luca Guadagino’s comingof- age drama Call Me By Your Name, which is widely expected to be one of the frontrunners when Oscar nominations are announced Jan. 23. It screens March 7, three days after the Academy Awards broadcast.
“It came out last summer and I started seeing buzz about it right away, and said, ‘ We have to get this.’”
BUFS will host a special pre-Oscars night Feb. 28 in which all of the nominees for Best Live Action Short will be screened.
“They’re always great little films, and a lot of them are from up- and- coming directors who go on to direct big films the next year,” says Henderson.
