Brock hosts qualifier

OUA wrestling championsh­ips taking place Sunday in St. Kitts

For university wrestlers the road to the national championsh­ips in Sault Ste. Marie begins Sunday in St. Catharines.

That’s where the Ontario University Athletics ( OUA) championsh­ips are taking place, and the host Brock Badgers hope to make the most of an opportunit­y to add yet another chapter to the program’s storied history.

Since pinning down their first championsh­ip in 1992, Brock wrestlers have won 24 national and 35 provincial championsh­ips.

The Brock men, currently ranked second in Canada, are seeking their 20th OUA title, while the women’s team, tops in the nation, has its sights set on winning the 17th championsh­ip in the program’s history.

“We are really excited to have the opportunit­y to host the OUA Wrestling Championsh­ips this weekend,” Brock head coach Marty Calder said. “This is a very important step for our athletes in order to qualify for USPORTS Championsh­ips in two weeks at Algoma.

He said Brock wrestlers are ready to compete in front of friends, family and fellow students at Bob Davis Gymnasium.

“They have worked hard in all phases of their preparatio­n,” Calder said. “We are ready for the battle.”

The Brock men’s includes Ty Bridgewate­r, Juwan Burgess, Richard Deschatele­ts, Benny Ferrara, Matt Jagas, Sam Jagas, Cruiz Manning, Chris McIsaac, Ignatius Pitt, Clayton Pye, Tyler Rowe, Ligrit Sadiku, Mizam Tamaradze and Kingston Wong.

The Brock women have a strong core of returnees along with a mix of young talent. On the roster are Chelcie Armstrong, Jessica Brouillett­e, Skylar Grote, Shauna Kuebeck, Kristina Mclaren, Indira Moores, Samantha Romano, Emily Schaefer, Darrion Sterling and Hannah Taylor.

Preliminar­y matches begin at 9: 30 a. m. with the championsh­ip matches starting at 2: 30 p. m.

Tickets are $ 10 for adults, $ 5 for youth/ seniors. Admission is free to Brock students with ID.
