Brock lauds athletes of week

Wrestlers pinned down three of four honours when Brock University named its top athletes for the week ending Sunday.

Wrestlers Sam Jagas of Kitchener and Clayton Pye of St. Catharines share male athlete of the week honours, while squash player Heather McLachlan of St. Catharines and wrestler Hannah Taylor of Cornwall, P. E. I., are co- female athletes of the week. Jagas, a fifth year biochemist­ry major, helped lead the No. 2 ranked Brock men’s wrestling team to the 20th Ontario University Athletics ( OUA) title in its history.

He posted a 3- 0 record to capture the gold medal in the 57- kilogram division at the one- day event held in St. Catharines.

Jagas was named to the first all- star team. Pye, in his third year studying psychology, went 3- 0 capturing the gold in the 90- kg class. The first- team all- star won one match by pinfall and another by technical superiorit­y.

McLachlan had the top performanc­e in Brock women’s squash history. The first- year medical sciences major compiled a 5- 0 record at the OUA championsh­ip becoming the first player to go undefeated for an entire season. McLachlan ended provincial­s as the conference’s player of the year and rookie of the year as well as a first- team all- star.

Taylor, a second- year sport management major, went 4- 0 in the 59- kg class helping the No. 1- ranked Brock women’s team win provinical­s for the 17th time. She was selected as the OUA’s outstandin­g female wrestler and a first- team all- star.
