Lowry gears up for second season

- DOUG SMITH

There was a moment in a game against the Detroit Pistons when Kyle Lowry simply tossed aside a couple of opponents to secure a loose ball, leaving bodies strewn around the floor in his wake.

Then there was moment against the Indiana Pacers where Dwane Casey remembers Lowry going “through their entire team and gets a loose ball and Cory (Joseph) has to foul him to keep him from going” for an uncontested basket.

Yes, it would seem the Toronto Raptors point guard is gearing himself up for the playoffs in fine fashion.

“He’s a pit bull,” C.J. Miles said when he tried to describe his teammate. “He looks at everybody like either you’re his food or you’re in front of his food. You got to get out of the way or I’m going to eat you, too.”

A bit of hyperbole, perhaps, but there is no question Lowry’s level of toughness is his most important trait.

Lowry’s play of late suggests he’s getting ready physically and mentally for the approaching playoffs. And given last year’s post-season ended in personal bitter disappointment after a sprained ankle kept him out of the last 2½ games of a sweep at the hands of the Cleveland Cavaliers, he seems particularly ramped up.

“That’s the only way he can survive in this league, that’s what made him an all-star, to have that edge,” Casey said.
