- BERND FRANKE Regional Sports Editor

Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League fans got their money’s worth Wednesday night — and Thursday morning — when the Ancaster Avalanche hosted the St. Catharines Falcons.

There were nine seconds remaining in the third overtime period when Liam Van Loon scored on the power play giving the Avalanche a 3-2 come-frombehind victory.

Third-seeded Ancaster scored three unanswered goals to even the best-of-seven Golden Horseshoe Conference semifinal with the No. 2 seed Falcons at two wins apiece.

Game 5 in a series in which the home team so far has won each time is 7 p.m. Friday at Jack Gatecliff Arena in St. Catharines. The sixth game is back in Ancaster for a 7:30 p.m. faceoff Saturday at Morgan Firestone Arena.

The Falcons have home-ice advantage should a seventh game be needed to decide who will be going on to face the defending conference champion Caledonia Corvairs in the final.

Tanner Main scored a shorthanded goal and Michael Davies an even-strength marker to give St. Catharines a 2-0 lead 3:27 into the second period of Wednesday night’s game in Ancaster.

Adam Meijer, on the power play, and Benjamin Woodhouse, with 1:03 left in the second period, replied for the Avalanche tying the game at two-all heading into the final frame.

Woodhouse had a chance to complete the comeback and end the drama midway into the first overtime but failed to find the back of the net after he was awarded a penalty shot.

Ancaster outshot St. Catharines 69-59 in a marathon in which the Avs’ Ryan Dugas and the Falcons’ Owen Savory were kept busy in their respective nets.

Ancaster went 2-for-8 on the power play; St. Catharines, 0for-8.

The Avalanche edged the Falcons in head-to-head play during the regular season three wins to two with one game ending in a tie. They outscored the Falcons 13-12 over the course of the sixgame series.
