Politicians thrive while seniors struggle

-

According to something I read on Facebook, seniors’ pensions are going up 57 cents a month. Wow, just think, in about three months, I might, just might be able to buy a package of gum!

Meanwhile, the regional chair is feasting on $200 meals and councillors are charging taxpayers for incidentals.

A number of years ago, my parents were instrumental in forming part of the Grantham Township Catholic School Board to help build St. Christopher’s School, which at the time, was at the edge of most of the houses there.

I can remember there being school board meetings around our kitchen table. The people involved were dedicated to building the school and not interested in soaking the taxpayers. I do not remember them ever getting paid. They did expense certain things but no charities or dinners.

Our regional councillors make more at a part-time job than a number of residents make doing a full-time job, especially those earning minimum wage. Not sure why that is. This is a position that should only be taken if one is civic minded and wants the best for the people they serve.

I’m not sure why they get an expense account on top of their pay. As a full-time worker, I could not expense meals, transportation, etc. I guess I was brought up to believe that people who wanted the good of the community should be on councils.

Last time I voted for council, I voted for those who stated in their platforms they would do their best to reduce the number of people on council.

By the way, I dare the federal politicians who decide the amount of money for Canada’s pensioners who built this country to try living on what is considered guaranteed income supplement amounts for at least six months. They couldn’t do it! Sandie Timco
