Welland tykes take Niagara title
Tigers finish season 38-3
Ethan Rousseau scored three goals, Mackenzie Welychka two and Sebastien Boucher one, and the Welland Mike Knapp Ford Tigers topped Grimsby 6-2 to end the tyke regular-season and playoffs undefeated.
Welland completed a sweep of the best-of-three Niagara District Hockey League final with the road win to capture the President’s Cup.
Liam Seguin, with four goals and an assist; and Welychka, two goals, three assists; were standouts on offence for the Tigers in 7-1 victory at home in opening game of the series.
Dylan Wood rounded out the scoring for Welland.
Jackson MacLeod and Brady Matte shared goaltending duties in both victories.
Welland went 23-0 in league play and 8-0 in the playoffs.
The only blemishes on an otherwise perfect season for the team were three losses while compiling a 7-3 record at tournaments.
Welland went 5-0 to win the tyke championship at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Christmas Classic tournament.
The players coached by Tim Welychka earned their stripes on both sides of puck. They scored 351 goals in 41 games while allowing only 50.
Welland and Grimsby advanced to the league championship final by going 6-0 and 4-2, respectively, at the fourteam qualifying tournament.
Glanbrook went 2-4 and Garden City 0-6.
