Wainfleet Wild aids grieving Humboldt hockey community

- KRIS DUBE

Even though the recent tragedy involving the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team occurred hundreds of kilometres away, it still hit close to home for the Wainfleet Wild minor hockey association.

Several players and parents were at the Port Colborne Sobeys store Saturday cooking hotdogs and hamburgers to raise money for the team and its community.

The money adds to the than $15 million was raised globally through an online GoFundMe campaign that closed last week.

Saturday’s barbecue in Port Colborne brought in $2,471 for the cause and the Wild is also selling $2 stickers in the community and through the league’s Facebook page.

“Hockey families — we stick together,” said Randi Labrie, one of the parents who organized the fundraising effort.

“We just want to do our part and show our support,” she said.

The horrific crash that took 16 lives and left others seriously injured occurred at highways 35 and 335, about 300 kilometres north of Regina, when a bus carrying members of the Broncos junior hockey team to a playoff game in Nipawin was in a collission with a tractor-trailer hauling peat moss.

On April 12, the entire country rallied together in solidarity with the Humboldt community by participating in ‘jersey day,’ wearing their favourite sports sweater to work and school.

Many groups in Niagara have paid respects to the families affected by the tragedy over the past two weeks.
