Lightning blank Whiners in 5-pin action

- JEFF STEVENS

As the 2017-18 Niagara 5-Pin Mixed Pro League season draws closer to the end, and with the Lakeside Electrical Lightning battling among the top three teams for the segment title, some bowlers are putting their best foot forward at the right time.

With Rob Fisher breathing down his neck in the men’s high average category, Tyler Wendel stomping his foot on the gas pedal and lit up the lanes to give himself some breathing room at the top. Wendel connected for a lane-melting 954 (350, 263, 341) series to spark the Lightning to a 3-0 blanking of the Wine Place Whiners.

Shawn Pellizari also picked up the cause and tossed 813 (274, 257, 282) for the winners while Will Morrison chipped in with 630 (263).

The Whiners answered with Norm Stup’s 765 (273, 294) and P.J. Cole’s 653 (244, 220).

The league-leading Scorecard Harry’s Half Pints, kept pace with the Lightning, who are only three points behind, by whitewashing the Oh Canada Eh Diner Show Town Criers 3-0.

Rob Macdonald kept his excellent season going, leading the Half Pints with a solid 813 (252, 246, 315), while Adam Eckhardt backed up his effort with a steady 727 (248, 224, 255).

The Town Criers shot back with Chris Disher’s 618 (209), and Rich Vassos, who was right behind with 616 (214).

Hall of famer Paul Asselin kept his team in the running for top spot as he reeled off a sizzling 844 (275, 254, 315) to lead the Reggie’s Renovations Inc. Hammerheads to a 2-1 win over the Oh Canada Eh Dinner Show Canucks.

Frank Newman lent support with 721 (277, 229, 215) while Wendy Bonnette rounded things out for the winners with 706 (220, 301).

The Canucks replied with Dave Pendlebury’s super 787 (214, 233, 340) and Rob Fisher’s 744 (233,

232, 279).

In the evening’s final match, the Crossfire Wrestling Piledrivers took two of three from the Dale Mellway Life Insurance Magic.

Chantal Papineau kept her grip on the ladies high average, leading the Piledrivers with a fine 791 (256, 219, 316) while getting help from Wilma Vanderzwaag’s 708 (273, 215, 220).

The Magic returned fire with Devon Pellizari’s 731 (211, 321) and Matt Kowalyk’s 717 (241, 287).
