Welland library to showcase local music

Niagara bands are invited to shake the shelves of Welland Public Library during a battle of the bands tour this summer.

The library said the three-part eliminatio­nstyle competitio­n aims to showcase the musical talents of Niagara residents aged 12 to 25.

Submission­s for this event, being held in partnershi­p with Seaway Mall, District School Board of Niagara, City of Welland and The Black Sheep Lounge, will be accepted until June 8.

Bands may submit only one original song and one cover song. Profession­al recordings will not be accepted, the library said. Successful candidates will be contacted by June 15.

The tour of library branches begins at the main branch, 50 The Boardwalk, inside Welland Civic Square on June 23, followed by Diamond Trail branch, 315 Southworth St. on July 28, and lastly the Seaway Mall branch, 800 Niagara St., on Aug. 25. All events start with a reception at 5 p.m. followed by the show at 6 p.m.

The library said the series is made possible by a Niagara Investment in Culture grant, with prizes provided by Kiwanis Club of Welland.
