Gazebo special chapter in Lions, library histories

Already it’s a welcome addition to Port Colborne Public Library, a welcoming place to enjoy the outdoors while using library services or just hanging out.

The seating area was made possible by a $10,000 donation by the Port Colborne Lions Club. On Sunday at 2 p.m. the library will be holding a dedication ceremony to say thanks.

“We’re grateful to the Port Colborne Lions Club for helping us make this possible,” said library services director Susan Therrien, who explained the donation covered about one-third of the gazebo’s cost.

The modern steel gazebo is a complement to the old-fashioned structure on the museum grounds.

“Whereas the other side looks to the past, we are rooted in the present and looking to the future,” she said.

Therrien said she’s been heartened to see how well used the gazebo is already — both by patrons making use of the library’s 24-hour Wi-Fi or Girl Guides holding a meeting.

“We want everybody to feel it’s a welcoming, happy and nice place to gather,” she said.

Therrien said Sunday’s dedication is a chance to pay tribute to the Lions and what they do for the library and community at large.

“They’re great supporters of literacy and a great supporter of families in the community,” she said.
