Busy hands at Welland church group sews together out of love

Through the generosity and talents of a local church congregation, three causes are receiving much-needed donations.

Part of a Mother’s Day project, a group of women at Central United Church in Welland recently organized a large collection of feminine hygiene products, packaged in hand-sewn bags, that will be donated to the Hope Centre as well as Open Arms Mission.

Called Sew Together for Central United, the hard-working volunteers have also crafted a quilt that will be used to raise fund for families and first responders involved in the recent tragedy in Humboldt, Sask.

One of the organizers of the effort created to benefit the two Welland-based organizations, Heather Grundy, said the church members and other people from the community were very eager to support both causes.

“Everybody knew it would be a great project,” she said.

Supporting people impacted by the horrific accident that claimed the lives of 16 people last month was an easy decision, said Joni Pitzell, the leader of the sewing group.

So many people can relate to families having to travel for sports — making it a cause that’s near and dear to their hearts, despite it taking place thousands of kilometres away.

“Almost everyone in Canada knows a child involved in sports,” she said.

Pitzell is also very grateful of the volunteers who helped with the church’s cause to support the people of the small Saskatchewan community.

“The ladies have been absolutely awesome,” she said.
