Artist’s work is alumin-ating

- KRIS DUBE

For seven years, Alex Baxo has been crafting pieces he says can’t be found anywhere else.

The Welland resident began creating ‘aluminism’ when he saw pieces of leftover metal lying around his dad’s welding shop.

A web programmer and marketing specialist by day, Baxo (whose real last name is Bacso), realized the potential in the materials that were siting unused.

It’s all been uphill since then. “As soon as I saw the metal, I saw artwork in them,” he said at a reception for his ongoing exhibit at Arts Place on Port Colborne’s King Street.

His work eventually evolved into using mostly aluminum, a material that doesn’t rust and one of the lightest in weight of all the different forms of metal.

Baxo uses angle grinders on aluminum panels then hits them with automotive paint and a clear coat, followed by sanding, polishing and waxing to a final product.

“Once I noticed the vibrancy of the aluminum, I knew I had to do

something,” he said, claiming that the style of art is unique.

“I really wanted to do something different that nobody else does.”

He has finished hundreds of pieces over the years and also has a website, www.baxo.art, where a large portion of work he has for sale can be viewed.

Arts Place will exhibit his work until July 15.
