Art Crawl adds splash of colour to Port

The threat of heavy rain was painted out of the picture just in time for Saturday’s Art Crawl in Port Colborne.

About 50 artists showed off their work along the Welland Canal on West Street, and on Clarence Street.

The downtown event that has taken place for the last eight years.

Josh Vail said having an event such as this in his backyard is a fantastic opportunity to display his talents for the first time.

“It’s great the community comes together and makes such a great event,” said Vail, who crafts mostly abstract pieces with a flair of expressionism and realism.

“I like to do something I’ve never seen before and not keep the same colours as everyone else,” he said.

The art crawl was also the first show for Hannah Visser, a Port Colborne resident who dabbles in photography.

Not only does her work get more eyes on it while on display, the event is a networking opportunity, she said.

“I’m seeing so many talented people and their work. I’m just happy to be here and branch out my brand,” she said.

Melani Pyke, a Crystal Beach artist who has been painting professionally for more than six years, decided the art crawl would be a great chance to launch North Shore Drift, a line of summer décor items made from driftwood harvested on the beaches of Fort Erie and Port Colborne.

“It’s something with a lower price point and is really suitable for cottages,” said Pyke.

Elizabeth (Putzy) Madronich, lead organizer for the artistic soiree in downtown Port Colborne, said the event was on its way to being deemed a success after the clouds broke and the sun started to shine.

“You just have to go with the flow and think on your toes sometimes at these events — and not get too stressed out about it,” she said.

A handful of musicians were also part of the event.
