Fake sex offender flyers in Fort Erie
Niagara Regional Police are investigating in Fort Erie after fake flyers about a sex offender were distributed across town.
Staff Sgt. Kim McAllister said officers were searching parts of the town Tuesday morning, looking for any additional fake flyers.
“If we can collect anything else, we will do our best to get forensic evidence, such as fingerprints or DNA, from that material, to see if we can get any hits.”
The flyers target a local citizen by name, claiming he is a sex offender who moved to Fort Erie from Mississauga. The flyer warns people to be on the lookout for suspicious activity, and it lists the address of two properties. Police say all the information is false and are asking the public not to share it.
The fabricated sex-offender flyers were found in the area of Bay Beach.
The incident comes just a week after a separate police investigation into what was described as “racist flyers” being handed out by someone in Fort Erie. Those flyers were, said McAllister, found at three different intersections in the town’s downtown area by Jarvis Street.
McAllister said there is no evidence to suggest the two incidents are connected, and separate investigations are being conducted into each case.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Fort Erie detachment at 905688-4111 ext. 2300.
