Cement truck rolls at roundabout
Charges are pending against the driver of a cement truck that rolled over on its side in Welland Monday afternoon, said Niagara OPP.
OPP, Welland Fire and Emergency Services and Niagara Emergency Medical Services all responded to the area of Highway 406 and East Main Street at the roundabout at 12:52 p.m.
Fire Chief Brian Kennedy said firefighters were on scene within three minutes and found the cement truck, owned by Cotton Ready Mix Concrete of Niagara Falls, rolled onto its driver’s side.
He said the driver of the fullyloaded truck was out of the vehicle when firefighters arrived.
OPP Sgt. Ted Clark said the vehicle was headed southbound on Highway 406 and took the right exit ramp to East Main Street.
“He was going too fast and got caught up in the median and the truck rolled over on its side,” said Clark.
The driver was taken to Welland hospital with minor injuries.
Two heavy tow trucks from Metro Collision were called to the scene to right the cement truck.
OPP shut down the ramp and Welland’s Rescue 1 blocked two westbound lanes of the roundabout to prevent traffic from getting on to East Main.
The eastbound lanes of East Main to Highway 406 were also shut down.
East Main Street and the Highway 406 roundabout was opened back up just before 4 p.m.
