Mustangs soccer team gallops into history
A high school soccer team that won the Ontario boys double A championship in 2008will be inducted into the Niagara Falls Sports Wall of Fame.
The St. Michael Mustangs are the only team being enshrined in an induction class that features six individuals.
Laura MacKenzie will see her plaque go up on the wall as an athlete for hockey, while fellow present-era inductees Ron Gallen, boxing; Gary MacDonald, rugby; and Chris MacKenzie, hockey; will be enshrined in the builders class.
Slo-pitch builders Emil (Sonny) Badonvinac and Ernie Reinhart are the inductees from the pre-1990 era.
Laura MacKenzie played professionally in two international leagues from 2001 to 2008 and was a head coach at the national level in Denmark from 2006 until 2008. Gallen coached more than 150 competitive boxers, including four national and two world champions.
MacDonald guided men’s and women’s teams to multiple championships in a 20-year career coaching rugby.
Chris MacKenzie coached Division 1 women’s hockey for more than a decade after playing at Niagara University and professionally for in Finland.
