Welland launches QR-coded corridor
Smartphones can link residents and visitors to a wealth of information
Welland has taken an interactive approach when it comes to linking people with public places along its recreation corridor.
Using smartphones or tablets, residents and visitors to the city can scan a QR code on signs at eight locations — Merritt Island, Welland Civic Square and Welland Public Library, Main Street Bridge, Merritt Park, Welland Community Wellness Complex, Welland International Flatwater Centre, Welland Skateboard & BMX Park, and Welland Boat Rental.
When scanned, information on events, Google maps, the city’s Discover Welland Guide, links to the city’s website, boat rental opportunities and much more will pop up on the person’s phone or tablet.
“The recreation corridor QR code project encourages active transportation along the waterway and canal trails,” said Welland’s manager of recreation and culture, Richard Dalton, in a release.
“It’s a network for residents and visitors to discover and explore Welland’s amazing assets and find opportunities right here in the city’s backyard.”
When at a site, people who use the QR code will also have access to information on the other seven areas.
“Having this information at users’ fingertips will encourage them to visit other public spaces along the corridor and take advantage of a vibrant and active community,” the city said.
