Hessels: No empty promises if mayor

- BRANDY FORD

Ted Hessels believes his experience as an alderman speaks volumes about his competency to become Wainfleet’s next mayor.

“I’ve always shown that I have the best interest for Wainfleet in my decision making. And I’ll continue to do the same thing. I guess my record will say whether I did a good job the last 12 years or not.”

Hessels is happy with the number of candidates running for mayor because he believes it means everyone wants to make a difference for Wainfleet.

“It’s great. I’m glad. The more competition the better. We’d all like to win, but

I have no problem with all of these people. They all want to do what is best for Wainfleet.”

Also running are Richard Dykstra, Kevin Gibson and Ken Martin.

Integrity is important to Hessels, and so is honesty.

“I won’t promise anything. I will just do my best to do what is best for Wainfleet,” he says. “I’ve always done what I think was right and I think I’m pretty open and transparent.”

Hessels says his experience with farming should be noted, too.

“I was born and raised on this place. I’ve been here all of my life. Farming is still my No. 1 thing now and I think that qualifies me for the job. I’ve run this business for over 34 years.”

Hessels has been a member of the Wainfleet volunteer fire department for 33 years and says he has put a lot of time and effort into the community, and has the best interests of the citizens on his mind.

“Out here, on the farm, money is mine and I can do what I want. But in council it is the taxpayers’ money and I have to look out for the citizens’ best interests. I’m the kind of guy that asks: ‘Is this something you need or is this something you want?’”

Hessels says he is committed to making sure the needs of Wainfleet are taken care of.
