Construction on 17 freehold townhouses on the west side of Denistoun Street could start in late October, said Dennis Liu, developer of Welland High Gardens.

Friday, Liu along with members of his company Dennis Home Corp, real estate agents and Ward 3 Coun. John Chiocchio opened a sales office at 200 West Main St. for the development.

Liu, owner/developer of the former Welland High School property at the corner of West Main and Denistoun streets, said he tried to understand the market and needs of Wellanders.

“We have three-storey townhouses that are very functional … they can accommodate young families,” he said, adding in-law suites can be included.

Liu said the pricing is very competitive and that the townhouses, the first phase of the development, start at $313,000.

Phase two of the development would see 60 more townhouses added inside the property and there would also eventually be a six-storey, 60- to 80-unit low rise condo on the West Main side, Lui said.

“We have 17 people interested in the first phase.”

The first units, he said, will be held until mid-September so more people have a chance to take part.

Chiocchio, representing Welland Mayor Frank Campion, said the development will have a huge impact on the city.

“It’s a big part of our plan to move the city forward for the next three to five years.”

Chiocchio said he was happy to see Lui name the project Welland High Gardens.

The sales office is open Monday to Thursday from 12:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.
