Wellanders invited to go for a Slow Roll
An inaugural cycling event in Welland this Saturday doesn’t require all the fancy and expensive gear that often comes with the sport.
The city will host Slow Roll, a family-friendly trek from Merritt Park to Welland International Flatwater Centre.
Also co-ordinated by the municipality’s active transportation advisory committee, the casual ride is designed to showcase and create appreciation for recreational trails in the community and promote an active lifestyle.
“We really want to celebrate the wonderful system of trails we have in Welland,” said Harold Sawchuk, chair of the committee.
The Slow Roll is an inclusive event that will welcome anyone who wants to pedal their way to registration at 10 a.m. ahead of a 10:30 a.m. event start from the island.
“We want it to be for everyone. It doesn’t matter what type of bike you have and you don’t need spandex,” quipped Sawchuk.
Krista Bowie, the city’s community development and volunteer co-ordinator, said the excursion is a way to appreciate the local trail system up close — instead of just looking at it from a passing vehicle.
“You really get to take it in and experience it in a different way,” she said.
Sawchuk said nobody will be judging the quality of ride some people might show up with.
“Take the dust off the old one that’s hanging in the garage and bring your kids with you.”
Parking will be available at the market square.
At the end of the course, a ‘blender bike’ will be on site, a bike that is equipped with a blender to make smoothies for participants.
