Impaired charges laid in death of motorcyclist
A 27-year-old Wainfleet woman faces multiple charges after a motorcylist died in a multi-vehicle collision on Highway 140 in Welland Wednesday night.
The crash occurred near Buchner Road at about 9 p.m., said Sgt. Kerry Schmidt from the Ontario Provincial Police.
The motorcycle driver, a 45year-old Welland man whose identity has not been released by police, was declared dead at the scene of the crash. His female
passenger, also 45 and a resident of Welland, was taken to hospital with injuries initially considered critical but which are now being called less serious.
“It does not appear to be lifethreatening at this time,” Schmidt said.
The OPP said as the vehicle was approaching the intersection at Buchner Road and Highway 140 it failed to stop as it approached other vehicles. It “slammed into” the rear of one vehicle then swerved out into the oncoming lane where it struck the motorcycle, said Schmidt.
The vehicle driver attempted to flee the scene on foot, said Schmidt, but was picked up about one hour later by Niagara Regional Police.
Schmidt said the warm fall weather had encouraged many motorcyclists to take their bikes out and described the crash as a “sad tragedy.”
Brooke Eden has been charged with impaired driving causing death, impaired driving causing bodily harm and failing to stop at the scene of and accident.
