- KRIS DUBÉ

Ontario Provincial Police are appealing to witnesses to a fatal crash on Highway 140 last week to come forward.

On Wednesday, Oct. 10, at about 9 p.m. a motorcycle carrying two people was struck headon while travelling south. A vehicle headed north rear-ended another car then ended up entering oncoming traffic, hitting the bike near Buchner Road.

Pronounced dead at the scene was a 45-year-old man, who the OPP have identified as Gregory Caissie of Welland.

His female passenger, also 45 and from Welland, received serious injuries requiring reconstructive surgery, OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said Monday at the scene of the collision.

Charged with impaired driving causing death, impaired driving causing bodily harm and failure to stop at the scene of an accident is 27-year-old Brooke Eden of Wainfleet.

The OPP is reaching out to people who passed by the crash scene before police arrived.

Schmidt said police also want to speak to anyone who knew the parties involved in the crash — “where these people were and what they were doing” — to help with their investigation.

“We want anyone who has information to come forward.”

People should call Const. Thourson at 905-356-1311.

Schmidt said a small dog was on the motorcycle and wasn’t harmed. A nearby resident had been keeping it safe.
