12 stitches for girl for snowmobile mishap

- KRIS DUBÉ

The mother of an eight-year-old girl injured on a snowmobile in Welland over the weekend has provided more of an explanation as to what happened.

GeorgeAnn Flintoff Marr said the machine was being operated by her boyfriend with her daughter also on it, in an attempt to move it Sunday from the backyard to the garage at her Marshall Avenue home.

The male who accompanied the young girl on the snowmobile asked her to “move off” but she heard it as “move up,” and in the process caused the vehicle to strike a parked truck on the road.

“They literally just had to make a right-hand turn and they would’ve been into the driveway and in the garage,” Flintoff Marr said Monday.

“She squeezed the throttle and it just took off from there.”

The young girl was taken to hospital and treated for two large gashes on her face that required 12 stitches.

X-rays determined she did not break any bones, nor did she suffer a concussion.

“It’s a miracle considering the damage to the vehicle,” the mom said.

She said moving a snowmobile on grass before winter weather has arrived is not unsafe and that there was no way of predicting such an accident.

“You don’t know what’s going to happen. You can’t live in fear every moment of your life,” she said.

Her daughter was released from hospital shortly after arriving to be cared for and monitored at home.
