Hot hands have no strings attached

Hall of famer bowlers adjusting to string pins at Pla Mor

- JEFF STEVENS

Since Pla Mor Lanes in St. Catharines abandoned its place as one of the last free-fall bowling alleys and converted to string pins, high scores have been a little harder to come by as the bowlers adjust to the new setup in the Niagara 5Pin Mixed Pro League.

Some bowlers are figuring it out already and Paul Asselin and Dave Pendlebury, a couple of Niagara 5-Pin Hall of Famers, are leading the way as they both tossed some fine series.

Asselin led the way with a 820 (265, 325, 230) while Pendlebury was right behind with 803 (287, 295, 221) to lead the Dale Mellway Life Insurance Magic to a 2-1 win over the Ontario Street Boston Pizza Brutes. Brad Gaudreau chimed in with 751 (239, 237, 275) for the winners.

Replying for the Brutes was

Tim Dixon who tossed 737 (208, 239, 290) while Jordan Gravelle added 687 (257, 268).

In the closest match of the night, decided by only 15 pins, the Oh Canada Eh Dinner Show

Town Criers edged the Oh Canada Eh Dinner Show Canucks 2-1.

Kile Robins sparked the winners with 712 (229, 255, 228) while Brad Maurice added 688 (254, 256).

The Canucks answered with Chantal Papineau, who not only had the best individual performance of the night but rolled the league’s season high triple and single, a blistering 921 (323, 343, 255).

The Reggie’s Renovations Inc. Hammerheads took two of three from the Scorecard Harry’s Half Pints. Melina Driver posted one of the better sets of the year, a sizzling 790 (253, 333, 204) to pace the winners while getting help from P.J. Cole’s 702 (275, 269) and Valerie Vallee, who chipped in with 685 (247, 267).

The Half Pints answered with Shawn Pellizari’s 748 (267, 214, 267) and Chris Disher who followed closely with 738 (241, 216, 281).

In the evening’s final match the Wine Place Whiners blanked the Lakeside Electrical Lightning 3-0.

Rob Macdonald had the hot hand for the Whiners, carding a masterful 783 (251, 284, 248) while Jeff Stevens added 685 (268, 228).

The Lightning fired back with Tyler Wendel’s 644 (226, 262).
