Bryan Adams heading to Meridian Centre

- JOHN LAW

Bryan Adams is coming back to the Garden City.

The Canadian rock icon will play Meridian Centre in St. Catharines Feb. 1, returning for the first time since playing an acoustic fundraiser for a new digital mammography unit in the city. Prior to that, he joined hometown supermodel Linda Evangelista in 1998 for a benefit concert for a hospital breast-screening centre.

“People still talk about the time he performed at the Jack (Gatecliff Arena) for a fundraiser with Linda Evangelista 20 years ago,” said Meridian Centre spokeswoman Kay Meilleur. “Niagara has come a long way since then and we are thrilled to have him back.”

The St. Catharines show will be the final stop of a brief Canadian tour for Adams starting Jan. 22 in Moncton, N.B. He releases a new album in March.

Meilleur says Adams has been on the arena’s wish list since it opened in 2014.

“The timing was finally perfect and we sealed the deal last week,” she said. “The feedback has already been so positive.” She compares it to the arena’s announcement of Elton John last year, with people flooding the venue with calls asking how to score tickets.

Adams, who turns 59 on Nov. 5, is a 20-time Juno winner and has earned multiple awards and honours, including the Order of Canada and Canada’s Walk of Fame. He has sold more than 75 million albums, behind only Celine Dion, Shania Twain and Justin Bieber among Canadian artists.

His biggest single, 1991’s “(Everything I Do) I Do It for You,” is among the biggest selling singles of all time.

Tickets will be $55 to $105, plus fees, and go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. at www.livenation.com. American Express card members can obtain tickets now.

All online ticket sales include a copy of Adams’ forthcoming album.
