Murphy leads Brock to home opener win
Badgers goaltender makes 35 saves in victory over Laurier
The Brock women’s hockey team capitalized on the power play to win their home opener 3-1 over the Laurier Golden Hawks at Seymour-Hannah Arena on Saturday.
Goaltender Jensen Murphy made 35 saves and the Badgers built a lead on a pair of powerplay goals in the first period.
“She’s good. She’s steady Eddie in the net. She’s one of the most technically-sound goalies I know,” said head coach Margot Page of Murphy, who is a senior student athlete studying medical sciences. “She’s going to make a great doctor, because she’s got all the qualities to make a great doctor.”
The Badgers’ penalty-kill erased four consecutive Golden Hawk power plays in the middle of the game.
“We survived it. At least we got our practice killing penalties,” said Page. “We’re using a lot of different players on the kill, so we weren’t too concerned with everyone’s energy, but it disrupts the flow of our lines. We have four really good lines and 12 good forwards.”
Amanda Ieradi and Kim Brown each tallied power-play markers and Annie Berg added an empty netter.
Laurier ended Murphy’s bid for a shutout with a goal which trickled by the netminder late in the third period.
